Ubuntu and Midi

I've just got this to work after months of lack of success :D I've
just installed kubuntu. My soundcard is reported as such by "lspci"
thus :
ultimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237
AC97 Audio Controller (rev 40)
ie - a cheap onboard card. The procedure is:
Install timidity and freepats
Start up kde with sound server enabled
Enter this in a terminal:
$ timidity -iA -OR &
Start up kmid, select the timidity device, then start listening!
I'd like to get this started up automatically, but the arts server
needs to be running for it to work. I haven't tried it with rosegarden
yet.
I've NEVER managed to get the "Test MIDI" working in the kcontrol sound
server applet - still doesn't.
I haven't seen MIDI working "out of the box" in any linux distro yet.
Haven't played with jack yet.
