Dependency problems

I upgraded from Warty to Hoary by changing the repositories in Synaptic
as the Release Notes 5.04 indicate, but I didn't apply first the
instructions which follow on the same webpage regarding SWAP, etc.

Synaptic closed unexpectedly after the upgrade and wasn't available when
I rebooted, so I apt-got isntall ubuntu-desktop

This made a few things availlable including Synaptic, but when I want to
install or remove anything, I get dependency problems and Synaptic
freezes.

How can I go about solving this situation?

Following, some errors:

E: postfix: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit
status 1
E: at: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: mailx: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
