Can't install new themes

The theme installation instructions you quoted are generic
instructions meant for installing themes that you download from
art.gnome.org or other similar sites. When you install themes using
Synaptic, the new theme should automatically show up in the theme
selection dialog. Some themes don't have a complete set of GTK
(application), icon, and Metacity (window border) themes, so those
typically don't show up in the main theme dialog. Go to theme details
and look through the various application themes, and Mist and Crux
should be there.
