I tried /usr/bin/X11/xorgconfig and it results in an error when GDM
tries to start.

Here are my attempts so far (all resulting in a fuzzy 640x480 display)

1. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

a. set vid ram to 8000kb
b. chose 'advanced' display setup
c. chose 'medium' setup

There must be one item I'm missing, because I did have a clear, crisp
display the last time I installed Ubuntu (Warty).
