gnome apps starting slowly (if at all)

well, i have 3: hda, hdc, hdd
/dev/hda1:
multcount = 0
IO_support = 0
unmaskirq = 0
using_dma = 1
keepsettings = 0
readonly = 0
readahead = 256
geometry 59556/16/63, sectors 30736613376, start 0
the other two (cd and dvd drive) dma isn't on, but why would that
affect programs on my harddisk? i can post them if you want, but i
already turned the dma on. i'm just stupified by this.
