I've got XFCE running with 771 mb of installed space on my /.

You can do a custom install of Ubuntu with the latest release
candidate (or final) of hoary (type custom and then enter at the
bootprompt of the cd). And after you can issue these commands :

Code:
--------------------

  $ sudo apt-get install gaim mozilla-firefox slocate xfce4 xfce4-goodies xfwm4 xserver-xorg
  $ sudo apt-get update
  $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  $sudo init 1
  $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (if needed because xserver won't start)

--------------------

Let me know if you want more information.
