Except that I kept getting an error trying to use /dev/dsp, the
resource was busy.

I did some Googling and found:

There is a link in there to vmwaredsp-1.1.tar.gz, but it is now up to
version 1.3, so instead, go to:

http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/  

and browse for the latest version of vmwaredsp.

For me, "vmwareesd" that comes with that package worked perfectly, using Hoary.
