It might run, but I would not recommend the default ubuntu for machines
with less than 128MB RAM. You should try to upgrade the RAM to
128-256MB, or configure ubuntu to use a lighter window manager (like
xfce4).

500 Mhz is certainly enough to run the default desktop (I have a PII
233Mhz with 128MB that is "running" hoary, although quite slow).
