video mirror on iBook

I have scoured the internet searching for the magic line of code that
will enable me to clone my iBook 1Ghz screen onto an external monitor. 
(I'm not really interested in spanning my desktop across multiple
monitors at this time.)  After countless revisions to my xorg.conf file
(including those in this thread), I have not had any success.  My
external monitor shows only:

	ok
	copying OF device tree ... done
	Initializing fake screen:  ATY,Via_A
	Calling quiesce ...
	returning 0x01400000 from prom_init

With some of the modifications I tried, the external screen was
brighter, and with others, dim (barely readable).  One change I made
disabled both displays completely, and I had to boot from a live CD to
restore my original xorg.conf.

I've tried both xorg.conf.dual & xorg.conf.merged from here:

I even tried this advice:

I've already spent way too much time messing with this with nothing to
show for it.  Can someone please advise me on this?
