If really you want one on the cheap side, you could buy used stuff.
I have an old AGFA SCSI Snapscan 1236s. Doesn't work at all under
Windows XP, but works like a charm in Ubuntu ! :o)
If you don't have a SCSI system, you can buy a cheap Adaptec 2940 for
peanuts (even cheaper than peanuts...) on Ebay (or wherever), or you may
find a Parallel port version of the same scanner, I think they might
exist.
AGFA scanners in general are very well supported by SANE/Linux I think,
so could probably go for any other AGFA model.
