Hi, first of all, i apologize about my english ;-)

see:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2661&highlight=mouse+pointer

In a brief:

I think that the mouse == mice is a kernel module (2.6.x Kernel version)

You have to change /etx/X11/XF86Config-4 file:

Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"

Change to:
Option "Device" "/dev/ttys0"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"

becarefull, is a zero not an O at /dev/ttys0.

For ask for a terminal at your ubuntu screen use
ALT+1 or ALT+F1 ,i don't remember very well, and a pop-up menu will appear

Saludos

I have windows xp on one Hdd and I installed UbuntuLinux on the other
Hdd. No problem.
But when I came to use Ubuntu I found that the mouse pointer does not
move. Just sits there in the center of the screen. I looked around on the
www for solutions. Is there a non-complicated way for a complete idiot
to tackle this problem. I have a Genius netscroll with a very ordinary
looking wheel and 2 clickers connected to a 9 pin serial plug. Nothing
fancy about that.
Any advise will be well received!!
Phil.
