ddcprobe / X : how to force refresh rates / timing ?

Google is you friend.... I finally found the PDF of the original manual.

It doesn't mention  1280x960, but it does state 85Hz @ 1204x768, and
65Hz @ 1280x1024.  So at 1280x960, it should be possible to achive a bit
more than 65Hz, say 67Hz, no ? At any rate it should at least do 65Hz,
not 60 like Gnome would like me to think.... So how do I force Ubuntu/X
whatever to run at 65+ Hz instead of 60 that I am currently stuck
with ??
