Thanks Daniel. The only other thing that doesn't seem to affect
anything but the ~/.xsession-errors file's size is the continual and
ubiquitous "art render invoke no image source given" error. It gets
generated thousands of times during a session.

Sound also is very difficult to nitiate, concerning system-based
notifications (Balsa mail, other mail apps, Epiphany system sounds,
etc.). Yet there seems to be no problem at all with sound for media
related apps (Players, etc)... But that is NOT a Ubuntu issue. It's an
Xfce issue.
