OK, solved this, but only sort-of.
If I reconfigure X and use the "VESA" driver, instead of the "ATI"
driver, then the screen is no longer corrupted.
However, presumably this means that I am not getting any sort of 2D
acceleration from my graphics card. Also, for some reason, it won't
switch to 1280x1024, which is the natural resolution of my TFT, and am
stuck at 1024x768.
Does anyone actually care about this? would I be better of reporting it
directly to X.org?
