[Hoary] Sound card issues

I have an envy24ht based PCI sound card, the Terratec Aureon 7.1 Space, 
in my main desktop machine.

The card is recognised, and all modules are loaded. No channels are 
muted, yet I have no output.

I even followed the instructions on the Alsa project page for 
configuring the card - no joy.

Does anyone know if the newer version of Alsa (1.0.9-rc2) will improve 
things? I am happy to try a manaual install if it's worth the effort. 
Does removing the current Alsa from Hoary break many dependencies? Has 
anyone got a 1.0.9-rc2 packaged for Ubuntu I can try?

Don't want to switch to XP when I need audio output.
