I know that the kernel has the capability to accept modules that were
compiled for another kernel version. There is some kernel configuration
option to enable this, but I don't know if this is enabled in Ubuntu.
But of course, the module can only work if there were no incompatible
changes in the kernel.
So I guess (and I mean guess :) that in case of a minor kernel upgrade
that does not affect the interface to the module, the module does not
need to be upgraded, and in other cases it has to.
