Question about configuring a light development environment...

...I would like to install ffmpeg but it would seem that there are no
headers and/or extraneous support libraries that would be needed.  So, I
was wondering what is the best/safest way to proceed with installing the
requisite headers and libraries, without breaking anything?

Or is this a daft thing to ask?  :/
