usb key not working

Hi there,

I'm having troubles with getting my USB key to work.  I'm using it on a 
sony vaio laptop and am not having troubles with usb (my mouse works fine).

When I go to plug in the key it first doesn't do anything.  Then when I 
go to "Computer" and open the "usb0" device it gives me a mount error 
like this;

Unable to mount the selected volume.
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified

Then when I go specify the filesystem type in fstab (which I really 
don't want to have to do) it says to me something different;

Unable to mount the volume. There is probably no media in the device.
mount: No medium found

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix my problem?
