Ubuntu vs USB problem

Hello,
I'm new to this group and have searched through the archive and didn't find
any indications of a problem I had being any way of a common one.
Already in the install process syslog shows some USB module failures which
then lead to a hang-up during the boot-up of newly installed Ubuntu .
It stops right after a "Starting usb.rc" message and only thing that helps
is to remove an execute bit from that script but that's not what I want,
because I have a USB mouse for one, without which the graphical interface is
not that convenient. ;)
Besides I have a Bluetooth dongle and a flash card reader and without those
I can't live. ;)

If this problem is solved I will feel free to call Ubuntu the best desktop
Linux to date! ;)

My mobo is Asus P4P800 with an Intel i865PE chipset of course.
