can't install/compile gcc-3.2

Hi,

I seem to be finding the wholes in universe ... The background is that I
am investigating ubuntu as a distro for our lab (>100 users, heavy
scientific use and code development) and being able to have several
versions of gcc is important for us. So I try

skluth at sn2dhcp4 ~ $ sudo apt-get install gcc-3.2
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package gcc-3.2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gcc-3.2 has no installation candidate

and then an attempt to build from source:

skluth at sn2dhcp4 ~ $ sudo apt-get build-dep gcc-3.2
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package gnat-3.2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gnat-3.2 has no installation candidate
E: Build-Depends dependency for gcc-3.2 cannot be satisfied because no
available versions of package gnat can satisfy version requirements

while the source is actually there in the universe:

skluth at sn2dhcp4 ~ $ sudo apt-get source gcc-3.2
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Need to get 22.5MB of source archives.
Get:1 http://archive.ubuntu.com warty/universe gcc-3.2 1:3.2.3ds9-9 (dsc)
[2174B]
Get:2 http://archive.ubuntu.com warty/universe gcc-3.2 1:3.2.3ds9-9 (tar)
[20.6MB]
Get:3 http://archive.ubuntu.com warty/universe gcc-3.2 1:3.2.3ds9-9 (diff)
[1852kB]
Fetched 3B in 2s (1B/s)
Skipping unpack of already unpacked source in gcc-3.2-3.2.3ds9

Let's try to build gnat first (although I have absolutely no idea why we
need an ADA compiler to build gcc ... )

skluth at sn2dhcp4 ~ $ sudo apt-get build-dep gnat-3.2
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package gnat-3.2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gnat-3.2 has no installation candidate
E: Build-Depends dependency for gnat-3.2 cannot be satisfied because no
available versions of package gnat can satisfy version requirements

Now I am stuck trying the "official" procedure to build gcc. I know I can
download a tarball and build directly, but that defeats the purpose of
using a decent distro.

Cheers, Stefan
