 I haven't install Ubuntu to on my computer yet, but Im shooting from
the hip, becasue it's Debian driven (im long-time Debian user). Try
run modconf as a root and see if you can disable unusable modules. If
there's no modconf for Ubuntu, get your favorite text editor and see
what's in /etc/modules.conf
