GL with ATI Radeon 9500 pro

I HATE my ATI card (R9500pro)!

I installed the fglrx from the universe repository (and had tried the  
official repository's version before), and am getting the following output:

dean at dim:~ $ fgl_glxgears
Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get fbconfig
dean at dim:~ $ glxgears
Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
1148 frames in 5.0 seconds = 229.600 FPS
1057 frames in 5.0 seconds = 211.400 FPS

So, it seems that I can run software 3d, but not accelerated...

Any suggestions are appreciated.
