Sounds like a Hardware-Cursor problem in X (interacting with the
video-card in your laptop).  Could you help try and track it down
by disabling the Hardware Cursor by adding the option as follows;  in the
file:

  /etc/X11/XF86Config

Try adding an "Option" line like:

  Section "Device"
    ...
    Option SWCursor on
    ...
  EndSection
