Thank you very much, sorry to be so dense... born with it!

Manually configuring a static IP address DURING installation cured the problem.
Netextreme BCM705 Gigabit Ethernet was copied from HAL but I do believe it should read ...BCM-5-705... as well.

My early experience with Ubuntu Linux has been great, your help with my network issue enhances that... only one issue after an install(so far) is amazing to me.

It doesn't matter if the broadcom chip is onboard or on an extern 
interface card. It is always connected via PCI bus.
Matt wants to tell you that you should try to configure a static IP 
address during installation.
Please read the bug report for workaround...
Is there a BCM705? I think you have the BCM_5_705 gigabit ethernet if I 
remember right.
Please post again if the workaround works for you.
