I had a look at the system monitor and something was gobling up 40% to
80% of CPU cycles without any apps running. It seems I needed to make
sure acpi didn't try to load by adding a acpi=off to the boot loader,
now my CPU idles at about 5% and programs are loading zippy again :-).
I'm very impressed with Ubuntu so far.
