Totem help

Can anyone tell me how to get totem-gstreamer to play movies of any kind.
I will not play any movie file nor will it play a dvd.

I installed the windows codecs from:
ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
(also installed mplayer which plays dvds fine)

When attempting to play a movie file, such as an mpeg, I only get the sound
and a black screen. DVDs I get nothing at all.
