Reconstructing Mozilla profiles

Since apparently the fix for getting a Firefox with a working "Find"
utility apparently has *two* steps for people with current packages:

  1. Upgrade

  and

  2. Nuke profile (as per thom on IRC, reports are that just deleting
  compreg doesn't work)

and Ubuntu makes a virtue of never touching user files, can someone
point me at a good resource on restoring those pesky little user
settings that I want to keep, in particular:

 1. Bookmarks

 2. Bookmarklets

 3. History

 4. Password database

http://www.holgermetzger.de/pdl.html in theory looks like such a guide,
but I can't find any files that look remotely like "12345678.s" or in
fact "anything at all.s".
