Desctop themes/Preferences/desktop icons

I could't work out how to change the desktop theme so I booted into my Debian install and had a look there.  It seems practicaly the whole menue tree to do with preferences is not there, I also noticed that My Computer icon, and a few others are not on the desktop.  There are actualy no icons on the desktop.  

It would be nice if at least the themes changer was included in the standard net install.  As they are not do i need to install some extra packages?
