iMac keyboard problem

Dear list,

On my iMac G3 (Rev. A, bondi) with the original iMac keyboard I have a
problem. During install it got set to "normal" US English, but I want to
use dead keys so tried to configure that through Computer > Desktop
Preferences > Keyboard . Every time I try to change the layout, I get an
XKB error saying there's an error during activation of XKB, probably an
internal X server error. It advises to use a more simple configuration,
but I can't get it any simpler than it is now. This is the output it
asked to include for bug reports:

[michel at imac michel]$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "macintosh", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "macintosh", "us", "", ""
[michel at imac michel]$ gconftool-2 -
R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
 layouts = [us_intl]
 model = macintosh
 overrideSettings = false
 options = [grp grp:alts_toggle]
 update_handlers = []

Anyone know this problem and a solution? Should I file this in bugzilla
as well? It looks like https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?
id=1089 . I have the latest available xfree from Ubuntu.
