the approach in gnome 2.8 is to make this automatically... if 
cd-burner detects a eraseable disk it should erase it before burning.
the checkbox for "Erase CD" in the UI is gone since 2.8 for HIG
purposes.

according the message you posted before (drive busy) it looks like you
should file a bug (probably directed upstream ? )....
