compiling mplayer

Is there maybe a better ubuntu-newbie/linux newbie list? It seems like
there are a lot of differrent levels of experience here and I know from
other lists how that can chafe a bit. In our defense, there does seem to
be some of us who would like just basic things answered, like my post
below, or how to install wallpaper, which i'd like to know also. Just
some thougts.
