Toshiba Portege 7200 install issues

I installed Ubuntu on a Toshiba Portege 7200 laptop. My issues are that for some reason after the install, it runs really slow on may laptop. I had fedora core 3 on it before and it ran fine. But anything i do with ubuntu, it would lag really slow. It would take foreever for the laptop to even boot into linux. Does anyone have similar issues running on a laptop running a p3 based cpu? Any suggestions to improve the performance of the install?
