prism54 wireless configuration

I'm new to the Debian world while giving Ubuntu a try.  I must say
initial impressions of Warty are good.

I'm running into trouble configuring my wireless internet on my
laptop, a Dell I8500.  The wired b44 interface works great, but I have
an internal mini-pci prism54 wifi card that I can't get configured. 
On mandrake/redhat like distros I'd just add:

alias eth1 prism54

to /etc/modprobe.conf

but that file doesn't seem to exist in Ubuntu, and I don't fully
understand the workins of the modprobe.d stuff.

I did download the isl3890 firmware for the card from prism54.org and
placed it in /usr/hotplug/firmware.

on boot the system does load the prism54 module but says this:
