ALSA on iMac + ESD problems

Keeping with the iMac questions... has anybody had any luck getting ALSA
running on an iMac? It isn't reporting any compatible devices on this
machine. Also, ESD is keeping sound from working in any Gnome apps. As
long as the ESD process is running, applications are reporting that my
audio device is in use (or something to that effect). If I kill the
process, the application is able to send sound to /dev/dsp without
problems. I guess either ESD doesn't like my sound hardware or it is not
configured properly.
