Changing media player

There is a GUI to change this when you click properties of a specific
file in nautilus, and in fact the changes appear in the file you
mentioned (except it's in ~/.local/share/applications). However, when
I'm in the GUI and click on another application as default, the radio
button which indicates the default application does NOT change, and
totem stays as default application. I know where to change it, but it
doesn't work. 

Here is my defaults.list:
[Default Applications]
text/plain=gedit.desktop
video/x-msvideo=mplayer.desktop
video/mpeg=mplayer1.desktop
audio/x-mp3=rhythmbox.desktop

Totem is still default, as I said :(
