Sorry for the delay in replying. First, I should tell

you that I am writing this on another computer (not

the one running Ubuntu). There is a question of

whether I will be able to get the information you want

from the Ubuntu machine into an email.



The xresprobe ati resulted in a file containing no

data. The /var/log/XFree86.0.log is close to 1K lines

long, but contains at the end: "Fatal screen error:

AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0"



In looking through the other files, it seemed clear to

me that Ubuntu had correctly identified the ATI video

card and even the monitor I was using.



I am sorry I cannot supply all the details right now,

but, hopefully, this will change.
