Ubuntu Linux under MS Virtual PC 2004

I have Ubuntu Linux installed under MS Virtual PC 2004.  When the GUI comes up, it is distorted and 
impossible to work with.

I have heard that the color depth may cause this, since Virtual PC 2004 doesn't support 24-bit 
color.  How can I change my system to use 16-bit color?  I have tried Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill X, 
but it restarts a second later.  Where is the color-depth setting (via the command prompt)?

Any ideas?
