You need to modprobe nvidia in order to load the nvidia kernel module,
this is not done automatically, since it might corrupt the kernel.
If X starts properly, you want to add nvidia to /etc/modules so that it
will be loaded at the next reboot.

PS we are working on a simpler solution to switch from nv to nvidia, but
it's not ready yet. Right now it's a bit raw.
