cdrecord???

What if that doesn't work? I'd like to use it, but it constantly comes 
up with a dialog saying 'Reload rewritable or blank media
Please replace the in-drive media by a rewritable or blank media.'

(of course, there is blank media in the drive)

fortunately for me, cdrecord works fine

from dmesg:
hdc: _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache

I was planning on investigating a little bit further, and then filing a
