[warty] lack of ethernet media autodetect (works in knoppix tho')

ibm thinkpad r40, pentium-M, yada yada.

The kernel (warty i686, i386) fails to detect media on the integrated
intel pro/100ve. I've tried both intel drivers and donald becker's by
blacklisting the other and rebooting. Manual configuration and
running of ifplugd does not work (for obvious reasons). Also, nothing
appears in /var/log/messages about media changes.

So, I grabbed the latest knoppix and it does detect eth0 media, the
kernel messages appearing on tty1.

I also have a wifi pcmcia card running via ndiswrapper, but
hotplug+ifplugd work it just fine.

hardly a show stopper, but of some annoyance as it is a laptop.

where to go from here?
