It would be preferable for you to help us debug that problem than to build
your own kernel; that way, it can be fixed for everyone, not only for you.

Building your own kernel may not even solve the problem.  Since you are
dealing with a PCMCIA card, you may have encountered this issue:

which was fixed in a recent pcmcia-cs update in Hoary.
