playing and ripping, ogg and mp3s?

Nothing extra required for OGG vorbis playing, perhaps you haven't
configured XMMS to use the esound output plugin?

Don't use GRIP, use Sound Juicer (Applications > Multimedia > Sound
Juicer CD Ripper). It's there by default on your desktop install. :-)
You will be able to do OGG encoding immediately with it.
