Ubuntu LiveCD gives a blank screen and stalls even in failsafe mode on Toshiba 3000-X4

Just tried the live cd on my toshiba satellite 3000-x4. In failsafe mode 
i just get a blank screen though the disk seems to be active for a 
minute or so (as if it was loading but could not be seen). In any other 
mode it goes to a blank screen then no disk activity (only left if for a 
minute or two).

Any ideas?
