This is a problem (endian) that was solved with
0.53.4-1ubuntu5. Unfortunately it didn't made it into the archive
before the release. I put the package online at
http://people.debian.org/~mvo/synaptic/warty. But IIRC there is no PPC
version available (I can't check now, I'm traveling).
