Mine was an alsa/esd problem... what worked for me was to reinstall
the alsa driver from source usinf the --with-cards= tag. Before doing
this I had two "mysterious" mixer entries (one for a silicon card and
one for my modem)... there is also an esd-alsa package in apt that
could fix it as well... or you could just turn off the Gnome sound
events ;)
