Can't stop machine shutdown

I have ubuntu installed on an HP Pavillion laptop that I want to leave
on 24/7. Every day, it turns itself off when I'm not around and I
can't get it to stay on. I have turned off acpi from grub's menu.lst
kernel line. I make sure the apm module isn't loaded. I have
unchecked the power management in the screensaver preferences window.
I can't think of anything else to try. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Chris
