Would Ubuntu be the first distro to support Pocket PC devicesout of the box?

I third it :) I also have trouble with my iPAQ on linux - it'd be
great
to have it work straight out of the box
But... is it really worth spending development effort and resources
towards M$ based products? These guys deliberately design
non-interoperability into they systems and products and then go and try
and coerce goverments into passing questionable laws in order to protect
their businesses.
I would not be surprised if there could be support for syncing Pocket
PC devices, there'd be a service pack that'll kill all of that so as
get users back on windoze.
I think it's better to start budgeting for a PDA based on open
standards or at least by companies with open and honest strategies.
