problem setting up PHP

Worked out what it was - I specified index.php, rather than yust the
site root and it worked.

I now get 
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in
/var/www/singleparents.org.uk/lib/db.inc on line 18

I suess I need to enable the mysql extension in php but dont know how?
