I have just installed Ubuntu 4.10 and I did not have MP3 playing out of
the box. I had to add universe to my apt sources and install
gstreamer0.8-mad. After doing that, I could play mp3s with totem. Since
rhythmbox uses gstreamer too, I'd guess it too would not work without
gstreamer0.8-mad.
