No sound, First install, VIA VT8233 motherboard

Hi,

I've just loaded warthog for the first time on a VIA
VT8233 based motherboard.  I cannot get sound to work.
 The CD player plays and looks like it's playing but
no sound output.  I believe the sound card is good
because the BIOS beeps through the sound card when I
boot.

I see Bug 1254 "other devices (sound, wireless?) fail
to work when lp/parport modules are loaded due to IRQ
conflict"

but I get errors when I try to unload the parallel
module.  

sudo modprobe -r parport_pc
FATAL: Module parport_pc is in use.

I would go into /etc/modules.conf and remark out
parport_pc but the text in that file says not to edit
the file directly, but to use update-modules.
Reading the manpage for that utility says that it is
obsolete and does nothing.  
I tried booting with acpi_irq_isa=7 and that doesn't
help.
